I just found a stray old page from a notebook from 1992 where I'd written down some programming project ideas:
Auto Disk Optimizer: would store files in an optimal way every time. If disk was too full, would suggest a number of floppies, suggest unused files or suggest backup to floppies.
Marvin the Paranoid Android DOS prompt. Every time you entered a command, it would precede execution with one of his typical complaints. (e.g. Me with a brain the size of a planet and you want me to list directories... okay)
Hamsters: A run in the background program or screen blanker. Little animated hamsters would occupy the bottom of the screen. You could buy exercise wheels, tubes. Food would be provided. They would make sawdust by chewing on your documents.
Memory map: graphic picture of how memory is being used.
Reverse Astrology: You would answer questions about yourself and it would tell you what sign you are.
Fortune Teller: feed it a dictionary, have it pick 5 words or make a sentence.
Foreign Words a Day: Every day give a word with its foreign equivalents. Make the user remember the words before the end of the day. (e.g. Lock the screen and they have to enter the correct answer or the screen stays blank for 5 seconds longer, etc).
